Sounds like you put in an incorrect storage path at some point then, it should have been up a directory. The server was shutdown on host maintance, but the data is stored on NFS.
Any idea how to repair it? You shouldn't have segments and then more starting at Not sure what would cause this. Any idea gouthamve krasi-georgiev? We are using Prometheus 2. We noticed that our disk consumption is quite high much higher than 1. Is this expected behaviour? Will the WAL logs clean up after some time? Or is the approx consumption per sample 13B expected 10 times higher?

Also csmarchbanks if you're interested :. I think we still want to use fsnotify to get file creation events. I think some type of pointer will be necessary for when a remote write endpoint goes down.2011 subaru outback sunroof drain location
We will need to not move forward in the WAL for that remote write until it comes back up. Also, if the current segment is deleted the pointer would have to be moved to the next segment. Relabeling seems expensive. Maybe the global config external labels bit is applied to samples in tsdb on ingestion and so we don't need to do it here? Still need to investigate here.
Isn't relabeling done on every sample now? So it shouldn't be any more expensive than the current implementation? Since you can specify relabel configs for each remote write I don't know how you can avoid it. I just want to confirm whether or not the external labels are applied on sample ingestion into TSDB. If they are, we don't need to attempt to apply them again when reading out of the tsdb. They aren't. I don't think main should start the wal watcher.
That will need to be inside the remote write code, and done for each remote write config like how we currently have a QueueManager for each.
What would be the reason for delaying starting the wal watcher using a channel? Seems like it would actually be good to have the wal reader read to the end of the wal without sending any of the samples before scraping starts to avoid sending duplicate samples? Some updates csmarchbanks tomwilkie we now do relabeling once per series per segment during storeSeries, and we store the series labels as prompb.
Label rather than tsdb or pkg Label so that we don't need to recreate the labels as those types on every call to storeSamples. Regarding the reads; the segment reader's Next function will ensure we always get an entire record something we can interpret as a metric with some value and timestamp or an error.
Rather than trying to find a way to have some kind of pointer into the WAL per remote write config, we could keep the existing structure of a goroutine per config, plus an additional routine that does the actual sending.
With the addition of a buffered queue, we could limit the amount of samples that could be read from the WAL and stored, waiting to be sent, at a time. We simply check the channel length to see if it's full and if so, skip reading within the existing select statement.

Use WAL to gather samples for remote write tomwilkie merged 3 commits into prometheus : master from cstyan : callum-tail-wal Feb 12, Copy link Quote reply. Example of WAL tailing. Still need to do something with what we read out of the WAL.Prometheus includes a local on-disk time series database, but also optionally integrates with remote storage systems.
Ingested samples are grouped into blocks of two hours. Each two-hour block consists of a directory containing one or more chunk files that contain all time series samples for that window of time, as well as a metadata file and index file which indexes metric names and labels to time series in the chunk files. When series are deleted via the API, deletion records are stored in separate tombstone files instead of deleting the data immediately from the chunk files.
The block for currently incoming samples is kept in memory and not fully persisted yet. It is secured against crashes by a write-ahead-log WAL that can be replayed when the Prometheus server restarts after a crash. Write-ahead log files are stored in the wal directory in MB segments. These files contain raw data that has not been compacted yet, so they are significantly larger than regular block files. Prometheus will keep a minimum of 3 write-ahead log files, however high-traffic servers may see more than three WAL files since it needs to keep at least two hours worth of raw data.
Note that a limitation of the local storage is that it is not clustered or replicated. Thus, it is not arbitrarily scalable or durable in the face of disk or node outages and should be treated as you would any other kind of single node database.
Using RAID for disk availability, snapshots for backups, capacity planning, etc, is recommended for improved durability. With proper storage durability and planning storing years of data in the local storage is possible. Careful evaluation is required for these systems as they vary greatly in durability, performance, and efficiency. For further details on file format, see TSDB format.
Prometheus has several flags that allow configuring the local storage. The most important ones are:. On average, Prometheus uses only around bytes per sample. Thus, to plan the capacity of a Prometheus server, you can use the rough formula:.
To tune the rate of ingested samples per second, you can either reduce the number of time series you scrape fewer targets or fewer series per targetor you can increase the scrape interval. However, reducing the number of series is likely more effective, due to compression of samples within a series.Prod 65 Warning required. I liked it so much, I watched it six times. The music is more like Star Trek and the theme is not as dark for the Alien franchise as you might think.
I was very well done and can't wait for the sequel to come out. I kept watching Prometheus every time it was on Directv. So I decided to buy my own copy so I can watch it anytime I want. Great movie folks.

I run a Prometheus server that briefly ran out of disk space earlier today. A colleague of mine made the volume larger. Prometheus was unable to scrape any targets from then on. I tried to do a restart of Prometheus, but what happened then was that Prometheus no longer wanted to start, terminating almost immediately with the message below:.
CC fabxc gouthamve. But I didn't actually see anything closer to It may well be the case that you did hit the limit, though. Many file systems keep a certain percentage of free space reserved to prevent excessive block fragmentation. Any other messages related to the WAL in the logs before? Recreated prom. I saw prometheus cluttered by the following logs yesterday in an instance we run in our ci cluster. Seems like prom was hosed and stopped collecting metrics.
I couldn't access the console, but that may be due to our proxy. I've restarted prom ever since because of a different issue I wanted to debug but I guess it is going to recur. Note: This was a case of mistaken ncdu usage. Never use it for looking for exact sizes. When I ran out of space, I did have similar issues though.
I then looked at some of my other 2. Is it possible that Prometheus is keeping those files open longer than needed? But maybe somehow I can't find them?GitHub is home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together.

The logs can be viewed at the links provided in the GitHub check blocks at the end of this conversation. In response to this :. Looks like compression ratios in the 1. Looks good to me so far, WAL fsync latencies are also down significantly.
Is it possible to restart each of the Prometheus instances? It would be interesting to see how reading the WAL at startup differs. Did a quick smoke test of remote write in both compressed and non-compressed modes and everything is looking good. I broke it into two commits for ease of review - one for a minimal tsdb update, one for adding the WAL compression flag.
Would also love to see that, I think the struct has to be exported to enable that and then we would have to pass it down from somewhere pretty high. Seemed like a more invasive change than making it global for now.
Definitely, just evangelizing this, this pattern is pretty spread around the codebase right now, so definitely something to solve here :. I wanted the tests to run using the compressed WAL since that is the future. Uncompressed is the default right now though so I could change them to false for now? I would probably make sense to test both cases here. I do agree compressed should some day become the default, but for now uncompressed is the default and the default should be tested.
Adding the compressed case is pretty easy will be done in a couple minutes. If it looks too complicated I can quickly revert it.
